The Hon Sam Doumany, Rotary Cub of Hope Island is the Patron of the Human Brain Research Program, originally a project of the Rotary Clubs of Maclean, Yamba and Iluka Woombah. The project is now sponsored by Rotary District 9640.

Professor Peter Silburn is a neurologist and a Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at The University of Queensland. He is a world-renowned expert in the treatment and research of Parkinson’s disease, related neurodegenerative disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation.

Professor Peter Silburn has pioneered the Deep Brain Penetration Surgery to give relief and quality of life to the patients who suffer from Parkinsons Disease. Peter has been very generous with his time and has been a guest speaker at the 2008, 2011 and 2013 District Conferences and has us all in awe of his expertise.

Professor Silburn’s treatment plan is now expanding to include other mental disorders associated with the brain.

District 9640 has committed to a 3 year programme to fund a Queensland University Phd student doing research into Parkinson’s Disease. Alan Weston, Chairman with his Committee are very proud of the support we have received with the 3 Clubs involved, however it is a desirable to seek further support from all the Clubs in the District, and members of the Community.
