Dear Rotary Colleagues:

Another year has begun and there seems to be an atmosphere of gloom and
despondency everywhere. Rotary's programs and services are needed more than
ever as we face this worldwide financial crisis.

In this issue, RI Secretary Ed Futa gives us the latest news update on the
economic impact on The Foundation. RI/TRF is taking all possible steps to
ensure that Rotary remains financially strong in this difficult economic
environment. Even in times of economic recession, Rotary leaders continue to
encourage increased givi ng to our Foundation and there are some useful tips
for all of us on pages 5-8.

You can also read an inspirational story from one of our Ambassadorial
Scholars - Taylor Lynn Chase (Colorado USA D-5470) - as she tells us of her
time spent in Russia. I am especially delighted to publish the experiences
of this remarkable young person and warmly invite other scholars/fellows to
tell us their story. This is why Chairman of the Foundation Trustees, PRIP
Jonathan Majiyagbe said recently: "If the general public were aware of half
of the good work our Rotary Foundation does, I'm convinced we would be
inundated with contributions and prospective members."

Past RI President Frank Devlyn, a member of Rotary Global History
Fellowship, outlines his thoughts on Rotary's best kept secret - the Rotary
Fellowships and Rotarian Action Groups. RAGs will play a pivotal role in the
new Future Vision of the Rotary Foundation - their expertise and dedication
to good causes will help transform The Foundation into a relevant,
sustainable Foundation, fit for its purpose " ... to good in the world".
.And that is why we unashamedly publicize and promote RAGs in these
newsletters.

At this time of year we begin the process of renewal as we plan for 2009/10
beginning with the International Assembly in San Diego. Whatever you are
doing right now and whatever role you will play in 2009/10, remember that we
can defeat the foes=2 0of understanding through FAITH, LOVE and COURAGE.

I am deeply indebted to my predecessor Dr. Eddie Blender for his guidance
and sage advice over many years. You will not be surprised to know that he
is still heavily involved in assembling this publication to which we are all
grateful. Eddie is a true friend, both to me and to you, the readers - from
all of us - THANK YOU Eddie!

Our next issue - February 2009 - will appear immediately following the
International Assembly in San Diego.

 In Rotary Service,

Calum
