December Message from HOC Birmingham Convention, Brian Fuller
When I look at our ticking clock on the HOC website,
www.rotaryconvention2009.com I can hardly
believe what I see. When the site went live we had well over four
hundred days to go before the
Convention and now it is under two hundred and thirty. Where has the
time gone?
It has certainly been well spent. Confirmed speakers include Mia Farrow,
Dame Jane Goodall, Deepa
Willingham and Tom Henderson. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has agreed to
address the Peace
Symposium prior to the Convention and there are more top names on the
way. At RI Conventions there
is always entertainment in the plenary sessions and 2009 will exceed
your expectations. A sixty strong
troupe is flying in from Korea, which includes the "Little Angels of
Korea" with their song and dance
routines, which have been a hit all over the world. They will be joined
by the Band of the Royal Marines and entertainers from
England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The Closing Event will be a one
hour costumed spectacular of British Musicals featuring
Liz Robertson, Yi Taewon and Robert Meadmore, all stars of the West End
stage. All of that is included in the registration fee of
course, as is Transport to and from the NEC and HOC events for those not
using their own cars.
Our own HOC events programme must be the finest entertainment programme
of any convention anywhere. Beginning with
Katherine Jenkins and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; moving
on to Warwick Castle; a great Host Hospitality
evening and then a "Night on the Town" featuring The Birmingham
Royal Ballet, The Treorchy Male Voice Choir and a fantastic
"East meets West" show, all in addition to Street Theatre,
wonderful restaurants and great shopping. Rarely can Rotarians have
had such an incredible opportunity. When did any Convention put on stage
the World's leading classical diva, as Katherine
Jenkins must now surely be following her $11 million dollar deal with
Warner Music, and one of the World's top ten Symphony
Orchestras? This is the chance of a lifetime to see Katherine perform
with low ticket prices at a fraction of what one would
normally pay. We have already booked over double the tickets for HOC
events that we expected at this stage and which we were
advised by RI to expect.
On Saturday 20th June 2009 proceedings start at the NEC with a Grand
Parade of the Nations, which will lead on to the opening
of the House of Friendship, the largest in Rotary history. 25,000 square
metres of fun, meeting space, non-stop entertainment
and much, much, more. There will never be a better opportunity for
Rotarians in RIBI to attend an RI Convention. Remember
this is only the fourth time one has been held in these islands in a
hundred years and it won't come again for a very, very long
time. Six thousand of us live within a one hour drive of the NEC, car
parking will be free and for those folk there need be no hotel
bills. For those from farther away at least travel costs will be
reasonable by comparison with going to Los Angeles this year or
Montreal next year.
Gather under one roof at the NEC
December 2008
Message from Chairman Host Organisation Committee, Brian Fuller
Remember 15th December is the cut off date for "Early Bird"
registrations and for the
discounted ticket for the Opening Concert and Warwick Castle. At around
£30 per day the
registration fee represents remarkable value for money and the cost of
the HOC events is
well below commercial prices.

Rotary International have confirmed that Keynote Speakers at the
Plenary Sessions of the Convention 2009 include Mia Farrow, actress,
humanitarian and polio survivor, Dame Jane Godall, renowned
primatologist and humanitarian, Deepa Willingham, Founder of PACE
Universal and Tom Henderson, Founder of Shelterbox. Archbishop
Desmond Tutu has agreed to address the Peace Symposium prior to the
Convention and there are more top names on the way.
Renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall's presentation at the
Convention
will focus on her conservation work as well as Roots & Shoots, her
global
environmental and humanitarian youth programme. Dame Jane began her
landmark
study of chimpanzees in Tanzania in June 1960 under the mentorship of
anthropologist and palaeontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. Her work at Gombe
Stream
would become the foundation of future primatological research and
redefine the
relationship between humans and animals. One of Dame Jane's most
significant
discoveries came in her first year at Gombe, when she saw chimpanzees
stripping leaves off stems to make tools for fishing termites out of
nearby
mounds. This and subsequent observations would force scientists to
rethink the
definition that separated man from other animals: "man the toolmaker."
Dame
Jane also observed chimps hunting and eating bushpigs and other animals,
disproving the widely held belief that chimpanzees were primarily
vegetarians.
In April 2002, then Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Dame Jane to
serve
as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She was reappointed in June 2007
by
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In 2004, Prince Charles invested her as a
Dame of the British Empire, the female equivalent of knighthood. In
2006, Dame
Jane received the French Legion of Honor, presented by Prime Minister
Dominique de Villepin, as well as the UNESCO Gold Medal.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED
All the things I have referred to thus far are great reasons to attend,
but there is more. An RI Convention is, quite simply, the
greatest Rotary Show on Earth. Birmingham will bring together Rotarians
from around 120 countries, providing a wonderful
opportunity for Rotary Fellowship, for learning about what happens in
other parts of the Rotary World and for making new friendships
which often become lifelong. If you belong to one of Rotary's many
fellowships have a look at your fellowship's web site
and see what is arranged especially for you.
In truth every Rotarian ought to experience an RI Convention at least
once in their Rotary lives. For Club Presidents there is an
invitation to attend the Lord Mayor of Birmingham's Grand Reunion
Breakfast on Saturday morning 20th June. Book on the HOC
ticket form.
And, finally one more important reason to attend. The RI President for
2009/10 will be John Kenny from the Rotary Club of
Grangemouth in Scotland. It is nearly fifteen years since RIBI produced
an RI President, so President Elect John's appointment
is one in which we can all take great pleasure. He will be in Birmingham
with his family and will address the Convention setting
out his thoughts for the ensuing year. John and June deserve our
support, so let's give it to them.
So! Take the plunge and register for the 100th Rotary Convention, book
your place at the great HOC events on offer and be
assured of a fabulous experience. Because it is the 100th Convention,
both RI and the HOC are working to make it a very special
event indeed. Please be positive and see the Convention for the great
opportunity it is and be part of it, not apart from it. You can
register on-line, book hotels (if you need them) and sign up for the HOC
events by going to www.rotaryconvention2009.com or
you can use snail mail, but beat the deadline. After December 15th all
the prices rise. I look forward to seeing you at the greatest
Rotary Show on Earth from 20th 24th June 2009.
