Archbishop Desmond Tutu to speak at 2009 peace symposium
The Rotary Foundation has announced that Archbishop Emeritus Desmond
Tutu of South Africa will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 Rotary
World Peace Symposium on 18 June in Birmingham, England. Tutu, a
Nobel Peace Prize recipient, will address Rotarians and Rotary peace
programs alumni on the challenges of peace-building.
Rotary's peace symposium, a preconvention event scheduled for 18-19
June, will focus on issues related to migration and refugees,
recovery and development, and the role of religion and ethnicity.
The Rotary World Peace Fellowships program is a peace studies
initiative that provides the next generation of leaders and diplomats
with the skills needed to resolve conflicts and promote peace.
Attending alumni are dedicating their careers to preventing and
resolving the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, hunger,
illiteracy, and environmental degradation.
Foundation alumni from 2001 or later are eligible to attend the RI
Convention, 21-24 June, at a reduced rate.

Mr. Arik Gutler-Ofir, Israel, Rotary World Peace Fellow, 2004-06,
University of Queensland, Australia, sponsored by the Rotary Club of
Maa'lot, Israel, District 2490
There are those who believe that theater and peace-building are
unrelated topics. Rotary World Peace Fellow Arik Gutler-Ofir begs to
differ. Arik has devoted much of his life to theater production, with
his work often slanting toward the field of peace and conflict
resolution, particularly between Jews and Arabs in homeland. He took
advantage of his applied field experience during his fellowship to study
with Jews for Just Peace in Vancouver, Canada, where he performed youth
theater relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Upon completing his fellowship, he returned to Israel where he set out
to produce the War, Peace, and Social Justice Festival at the Al-Laz
Theatre in Acre, Israel, an idea he first conceived during his
fellowship. The festival, held over five days in June, showcased nine
plays in which ideas of peace amid the conflict-prone region were
discussed. About 700 people attended the festival.
Rotary World Peace Fellows A Hit All Over the World
Alumni and current fellows from the Rotary World Peace Fellowship have
been invited to speak at Rotary Institutes around the world this year.
The feedback from those who hear them speak has been universally
positive. Here is a sample of comments from Rotarians who heard these
presentations.
"It was well done and well received. Both RIPE Kenny and TRFT
Okudzeto made positive comments about (him) in their remarks."
"I thought (she) gave an inspiring, animated, passionate
presentation."
"She is a good speaker and a very good story teller. Her story about
her job in Kosovo helping children in need was particularly emotive and
she had an impact on the audience."
