RYLA In Action

Your district RYLA team consists of past awardees, Rotarians and Partners who work very hard to ensure that District 9640 has a first class RYLA that you can all be proud of. The monthly meetings and training sessions are held throughout the District to share traveling costs and this year we have met once in Brisbane and we will also be traveling to Toowoomba because so many of the attendants are living and studying in those two places.
L to R: Ashley Lingwood, Zoe Ralf, Andrew Jordan, Campbell Chisholm, Tracey Johnson, Fabienne Zhwalen (YEP Surfers Paradise), Lisa Beesley (Secretary).

Since May the team has achieved the following:

  • Built and signed team agreements (What we expect of each other)
  • Formed task groups to work on various activities leading up to and during the seminar.
  • Selected a theme song (Your Life is Now - John Mellancamp)
  • Selected a theme for the seminar (Your Life is Now)
  • Developed a mission statement that includes the seminar theme and the RI theme for this year.
  • Decided on shirt colours and styles.
  • Designed the logo for the shirts and the seminar.
  • Tendered for and obtained quotations for shirts.
  • Chosen the main music for the entire seminar.

L to R: Simon Spash, John Zannes, Jane Hoffman (Team Leader), Tanya Cameron, PDG Dug Graydon, Judy Graydon, PP Col Makin (Broadbeach)

The task groups have been hard at work planning the activities for the entire week. Approaching businesses for sponsorship for auction and raffle items as well as sending employees to RYLA. Sourcing equipment, music, gifts for speakers and the myriad of sundry items needed for a week at Bornhoffen. Additionally, each meeting has involved some type of team building activity and a bit of fun. Future meetings will involve training, counseling, and people skills amongst other things.
L to R: PP Geoff Lance (Coolangatta/Tweed), Hamish Robertson, DGE Neil Maxwell, Justin Keevers, Serena Free, Angela Rutland, Chrissy Sonego, Kent Gooding, Ashley Lingwood.

The experience that the young people involved in the team gain from this exercise will be invaluable to them for the rest of their lives. These are young adults whose only desire is to give back to the community something that was given to them when you sponsored them to RYLA as an awardee.

Vocational Service in Action

QUEENSLAND CANCER FUND AND THE "ROTARY DISTRICT 9640 CANCER RESEARCH GRANT"

Hi and welcome to Vocational Service and information of interest for September.

We appear to be looking in great shape with our programs CREATING AWARENESS and TAKE ACTION particularly for the DISTRICT 9640 CANCER RESEARCH GRANT.
The Queensland Cancer Fund (QCF) has had a long and fruitful relationship with Rotary in all areas of support in various projects over many years. Within Rotary District 9640, many Gold Coast Clubs and others have participated in the annual DoorKnock Appeal, Melanoma Screening Trial and recent Men's Health Survey.
Several Clubs of late that include the Rotary Club of Ashmore, supported the QCF through their Annual Doll, Teddy and Train Exhibition. Also the Ashmore Club, joined with the Rotary Club of Mermaid Beach for the Classic Yester Year Car Show, to raise funds for the QCF and The Blue Nursing.
The Rotary Club of Southport has been a constant supporter over many years to the QCF, with various programs and in particular the Rotary Club and Sun Newspaper's COURTESY AND KINDNESS annual award winners cheque donated to support the QCF's - "Seize The Day Program".
As we now know as common knowledge District Governor Heather has made available a District Award to a Club that raises the most amount of money for the Rotary District 9640 Cancer Research Grant. The QCF will also provide appropriate recognition to the district and the winning club for their support. QCF will also advise details of the research grant, and with regular reports from the researcher on progress of the research. The Researcher would be available to speak on his/ her research as a special district convention. Staff of the QCF would be available to address Rotary Clubs on a regular basis as guest speakers. Friends, we can make a difference by considering to support the QCF and the many avenues of cancer for research.
Cancer is a word that is recognised by all as a cloud that may hang above each and every one of us. It now calls on you and I to assist with Prevention,. Support; and finding a Cure through Research for 200 different types of cancer. Vocational Service Directors the offer has been extended to clubs by the QCF for staff to attained your club as guest speakers to give a comprehensive coverage of the QCF.

ROTARY DISTRICT 9640 SUPPORTS "CPR 2000"

Rotary District 9640 & our "First Lady", Governor Heather Yarker has encouraged all District Rotary Clubs to participate in the training and teaching of CPR Skill's.
District Vocational Service Co-ordinator PP Des Roberts has the roll to promote the Project, and assist Rotary Members, their Friends and Relatives to acquire the skills from CPR training; and for the day they may "Save A Life"of a person who suddenly falls to the floor, a victim of a "Cardiac Arrest".
District Governor Heather in supporting the CPR Program, has included CPR2000 as a major District Award to a Rotary club that has assisted in the training of the most number of people, and will receive the "High Achievement" Award at the District Conference in March 2001.
As each Rotary Year commences 1st July, work to promote CPR and to encourage Club Directors and Members, has been in place for several months, & with great interest in the promotion and the information material that had been presented to all club Vocational Service Directors. Latest information has advised that a number of clubs have in place, a training program that has commenced, although most clubs we believe will have the CPR program well in hand by late July or early August, when members will be encouraged to become Peer Trainers, Co-ordinators or Team Leaders.
