New Generations
Month highlights important Opportunities
President Frank
Devlyn's Task Forces include New Generations as follows;
- Encourage
all Rotary clubs to participate in Rotary's existing programs in support
of youth including Rotaract, Interact, RYLA and Youth Exchange.
- Promote youth
service opportunities at PETS, district assemblies, and conferences
- Encourage
invitations of Interactors, Rotaractors, Youth Exchange students and participants
of other Rotary-sponsored youth services to attend Rotary club meetings
The World Health
Organisation defines Young people as aged 10-24 Years of age. The WHO defines
four areas of concern in relation to young people;
- Biological
and medical issues.
- Sexually related
issues.
- Risk taking
behaviours.
- Psychiatric
emotional problems
Surveys suggest
that as a generational characteristic, many young people today are cynical,
pessimistic and disengaged.
This is not only a reflection of young people, but also a reflection on modem
society and culture. Wilhelm Reich says in his book Children of the Future.
"The fate of the human race will be shaped by the character structures
of the Children of the Future. In their hands and hearts the great decisions
will lie. There are two crucial prerequisites for healthy growth and development
1. A
close relationship with a dependable adult
2. The perception of meaningful opportunities in mainstream society. "
I often hear
Rotarians talking in these general terms. I consider this to be because Rotarians
Care.
As Rotarians we have access to a lot of opportunities and possibilities through
our many and varied New Generations Programs. Youth Exchange, long and short
term.
Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment.
Rotary Youth Transition Seminar.
Rotary Youth Leadership Award.
Seimens Science Experience, National Youth Science Forum and Honeywell Engineering
Summer School.
Interact Clubs and Model United Nations Assembly and the Gold Coast Junior
Council and Youth Suicide Prevention Program.
The Australian Rotary Health Research Fund has sponsored research studies
into youth social issues. Clubs also act as mentors, sponsors and provide
mock interviews. Currently opportunity exists for a relationship with "Debono
Centre for Thinking".
Rotarians are concerned and are surrounded with opportunities to take action
to become involved with our youth in so many different ways.
Who are you to do it? you ask… Mandella would ask "who are you not to". Everyone
is a champion!
