Club Service in Action This is the first Avenue of Service. The development of Aquaintance as an opportunity for Service. From RC Alstonville Bulletin Ivan Eichorn spoke to us about his experience as a volunteer at the Olympics. Ivan recalled that once he put his helpers uniform on everyone spoke to him, rather different to what you normally experience in Sydney. Ivan said that it was the international understanding and goodwill that was the most outstanding thing that he encountered as a volunteer. He said it was wonderful to see the crowds applauding all nationalities. Being a volunteer made Ivan very proud to be an Australian and a Rotarian and he was pleased that his cancer did not stop him. Ivan went on to talk about the apparent imbalance when it came to recognition. He explained that there are many volunteers in our community who don't get the recognition they deserve, and suggested that perhaps Rotary could consider a program to recognize local volunteers on an annual basis. Ivan believes there is a shortage of volunteers and that a recognition program would help to encourage such activities in our community. Ivan said that we could consider sponsoring such activities as Rotaract, Interact, Austswim and team sports for kids in our community.
