Club Service in Action

This is the first Avenue of Service. The development of Aquaintance as an opportunity for Service.

From RC Alstonville Bulletin

Ivan Eichorn spoke to us about his experience as a volunteer at the Olympics. Ivan recalled that once he put his helpers uniform on everyone spoke to him, rather different to what you normally experience in Sydney. Ivan said that it was the international understanding and goodwill that was the most outstanding thing that he encountered as a volunteer. He said it was wonderful to see the crowds applauding all nationalities. Being a volunteer made Ivan very proud to be an Australian and a Rotarian and he was pleased that his cancer did not stop him. Ivan went on to talk about the apparent imbalance when it came to recognition. He explained that there are many volunteers in our community who don't get the recognition they deserve, and suggested that perhaps Rotary could consider a program to recognize local volunteers on an annual basis. Ivan believes there is a shortage of volunteers and that a recognition program would help to encourage such activities in our community. Ivan said that we could consider sponsoring such activities as Rotaract, Interact, Austswim and team sports for kids in our community. (Key Interest- Unsung Community Hero's)

Community Service in Action

The third Avenue of Service. The application of the ideal of Service in each Rotarians personal, business and community life.

Liver Cell Bank

Currently, a child with a diseased liver will die unless a donor organ becomes available. 3 year old Zac Harris is a liver patient. There is a shortage of donors worldwide. Researchers at the Murdock Children's Research Institute at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital are working on a radical new medical technique. The procedure is traumatic, risky and expensive. Est $150,000 with the patient needing life long use of immunosuppressant drugs, to prevent organ rejection. A method is being developed by the Institute whereby healthy human liver cells can be transfused into diseased livers to repopulate and rejuvenate the organ and thereby negate the need for a transplant. The procedure is a one day visit to the hospital costing only $10,000. The Murdock Institute, is aiming to establish a "human liver cell bank". This will operate in much the same way as a blood bank and supply hospitals all around Australia. Corporate and community groups facilitated by our Rotary Clubs, can procure items of equipment to ensure the liver cell bank is fully equipped.
