NEW GENERATIONS IN ACTION

CLUB SERVICE IN ACTION

It's OK to look back, but don't stare!

My Rotary Friends

As you read my final Flying Times message I have no doubt you will pause for a moment, close your eyes and run your mind back across your memory of the past year of your Service through Rotary. I trust it brings back a feeling of satisfaction for the role you played and the new friendships you built, of the ideas you shared and the outcomes you contributed to.
Congratulations.

This year we have openly referred to "opportunity" in Rotary terms. Not my opportunity so much as your opportunity - to do more with your life than you ever thought possible, as Sir Clem Renouf said. My role has been a pleasant one of representing Rotary International in your District 9640 and of offering Leadership and exposing opportunity…
your opportunity.
During this year most Clubs have introduced new Members to either increase or maintain the critical Club Membership base. These wonderful new Members are asking what they have become a part of? Is it a Networking Club? Is it a friendship Club? Is it a social Club? Is it a weekend working bee Club? Is it a cheque book Club? Is it one members Club? They are asking What is this Rotary that Members seem to hold so high. What is this Rotary that seems to do all these amazing things and have all these amazing programs of fun and Service?
Rotary is all this and a whole lot more. Just cast your mind across the Group Study Exchange Teams from Alaska and Western Samoa, the 32 short and long term exchange students from many countries and cultures, the friendship exchanges to and from Alaska, and Bristol and toTurkey as well as the many visits to and from people met through past Rotary opportunities that have lead to return visits and hosting. Locally you have our personal youth development programs of RYLA, RYTS, RYPEN, MUNA, YEP, Adventure in Citizenship, Science programs as well as something for you with CPR2000 and Community Hero recognition, as well as supporting the world through PolioPlus Partners and HungerPlus.

Then there was more opportunity at conference with so many attending to share with our wonderful speakers and youth presentations, and your support of the Matching Grants which is still growing in benefits to people we will never meet. The Cataract operations in Nepal and Bali, the artificial legs in Nepal, Cambodia and PNG the literacy, bednets, hearing aids, equipment and lots lots more which all becomes an opportunity for someone you will never meet and yet you have a feeling of satisfaction because you have done more with your life than you could have had you stayed home or only supported your favourite sporting or social club.

As I have said my role is not position or the jacket but the provision of opportunity through caring leadership, example and encouragement.
I trust as you look back on your recent past Rotary service you can quietly smile to yourself and say "made a difference to that one", "helped make that a success", "contributed to the effort with those folk", "gave them a start", in short you feel that you can look back with satisfaction that within the limits of reality as a volunteer all the effort and prioritising has enhanced your ability to look forward with greater vision.
Naturally I am proud to have worked with a fine group of Presidents, Boards, Members, Partners and in many cases Friends of Rotary. I have not been alone and have had all the support I called for from the District Leadership Team of Assistant Governors, Avenue of Service Coordinators, Secretary, Treasurer, Printer, Conference Chairman, my Club and my many personal friends who have just been there all the way.

It is impossible in this situation to effectively say thankyou for your sharing, caring respect and support, your commitment and your friendship. I think you have responded this year because you care for the future and you embrace the opportunities arising from embodying Service Above Self.

Your Rotary Friend
Heather
