COMMUNITY SERVICE IN ACTION

ROTARACT IN ACTION

July - Literacy Month

Illiteracy lies at the root of poverty.
It is estimated that 1 Billion people - 3/5ths of whom are women - do not have effective literacy and numeracy skills.
Because girls do not have access to education in many parts of the world, providing women with literacy skills can have far reaching positive effects. A mother who can read will teach her children to read, thus helping to break the cycle of poverty and enhancing her family.
Although 98% of the worlds illiterate live in developing countries more than a third of the adults in industrialized countries cannot read well enough to decipher prescriptions or fill out employment forms.
Identify ethnic groups in your community with special literacy needs and seek an action solution. Ask your school Principal if Rotarians can become a mentor.

July 24th, 2000

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us.
We ask ourselves "Who am I to be brilliant?" Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you."
And so on.. do you recognize this quote from Nelson Mandella?
How powerful are we? What can we do? There is nothing wrong with commitment, caring, concern and compassion. The world needs it and the world needs you.
Our Rotary International President Frank Devlyn's theme calls on us take a look, then act. Maybe Nelson Mandella would say take a look at our power and then release it.
In preparing for this period in the history of Rotary in your experience I have encouraged our District Leadership Team Members to be proud of the things we think, say or do. They have taken a look and are ready to act.
Assistant Governors and Service Coordinators have been vitally involved in preparation which has been evident at our Presidents Training and District Assembly. To support them I have had Leadership Manuals prepared to further support every Club Officers in our District. Now everyone should have a District Leadership Directory which you will have had a quick look at. It has also been produced with you in mind.
Club Presidents at PETS and all who attended the Assembly and District Changeover have already heard me say. " You have your information. You have your mission. You have your attitude." The rest is up to you. You can turn your Club on or you can turn your Club off as a President, Director or Member. The opportunities and possibilities that are all around you are in your hands.
This is not a rehearsal.
No one can predict to what heights you can soar in 2000-2001.
Even you will not know until you spread your wings so Create Awareness and Take Action.

Your Friend Heather
