Vocational Service in Action

The second Avenue of Service. High ethical standards in business and professions; The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

Indigenous Medical Scholarships Project.
A cooperative project between Rotary and the Dep't of Human Service, S.A. The RC of Nerang has provided $2,500 yearly for a Medical Scholarship to an indigenous student to help increase numbers of Indigenous Doctors to help improve the health of indigenous people. There are only 35 Indigenous Doctors in Australia.

Rotary District 9640 Cancer Research Fund grows. Congratulations to the many Clubs who organised time and volunteers for the Queensland Cancer Fund Door Knock Appeal. All funds raised and donations can be directed to Yvonne Wotherspoon, for the recording of your Club's support to our District Research Fund. Send to; Qld Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 2146 Southport. Qld 4215. Yvonne and her volunteers are excellent interesting guest speakers.

Many Community Hero's recognised at Runaway Bay.
The concept is proving most popular. Presidents say it is a highlight of the year and costs so little yet reaches into the community and to other activities of Members..

 

Community Service in Action

Suicide Prevention and Mental Health in our Community Seminar at Robina Community Centre.
21st February 7.30pm.
Program; Suicide Prevention - From adolescents to the older person, risk and protective factors- what to look for and what to do.
Presented by Professor Diego De Leo a graduate in Medicine and Surgery, specialising in Psychiatry. Has held many international positions and is currently Director of the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention.

Mental Health - Recognition and support structures within the community. Presented by Professor Philip Morris trained in Medicine at the University of NSW with post graduate training and research in Psychiatry in both Australian and USA hospitals. Currently Director of the Integrated Mental Health Service, Gold Coast hospital.

District Response - Local strategies, support & resourses on the Gold Coast. Presented by a member of the Southcoast Public Health Unit. No charge. Supper incl. This is a joint Partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, Qld Government and Rotary

District 9640 Southport President David Child and John Appleton (Surfers Sunrise) donate a laptop and software to Matthew. Matthew is the only child in Australia with Bath Syndrome (deterioration of the heart)
