Vocational
Service in Action
The
second Avenue of Service. High ethical standards in business and professions;
The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying
of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
The
CD ROM Key to a Students Future... "A bright New Idea"
For a variety
of reasons not every Secondary School student moves on to Tertiary education,
Some move into trades while others take up positions in semi and unskilled
occupations, others simply drift into long term unemployment.
Vocational Service Director of RC of Stones Corner, Brisbane D.9630 John
Jukes asked a teenager "what are you going to do after school?" The reply
was "I dunno".
John advertised in the Multi media Dept. of Southbank TAFE, met with a
group of final year students who had to produce a working CD Rom for exams,
and a new project for the Rotary Club began. Following interviews with
guidance officers and students, the focus of the content material for
the CD was determined. The target audience of the disc became the secondary
school student not reaching full potential or in danger of dropping out.
This was to be the program they could be given by the school guidance
officer to play on the computer and have discussions. Deliberately planned
as a user friendly student to student, not teacher student communication,
the only adult audio/visual segmnents were to be intervuiews with inspirational
icons known and admired by students. Eg Wayne Bennett.
The CD became "Who am I"? " What are my opinions"? "Overcoming problems".
"School-should I stay or leave". "World beyond school". As well, "start
your own business", "write a resume", "conduct yourself in an interview"
and " searching for jobs".
This CD Rom
can be obtained from the RC of Stones Corner.

The National
Bowelscan Committee has advised District Chairman Kevin Hassey (Yamba)
that they desire all participating Rotary Clubs to coordinate their Bowelscan
kit selling period from the 3rd to 10th March 2001 which is immediately
after National Bowel Cancer Awareness Week.
Cost of the
kits will be the same price as last year, GST will not apply to the sale
price and Sullivan Nicholaides or other arrangements will continue to
carry out the pathology tests.
TV advertising,
plus radio, newspapers and leaflets increased kit sales last year by a
massive 40%. Expect another increase this year with National Advertising
as well.

Have you had
your HungerPlus Soup? Rotarian Brad Francis nearly chokes on soup as Lesley
O'Connor (Ashmore) hesitates on soup but offers to work in an Indonesian
Orphanage as a FAIM Project Volunteer.
'Club
within a Club' How to increase your Rotary Club Membership by a massive
40% or more - unbelievable but true!
The simple
Process
- Create
a list of prospective members - this can be done in a variety of ways
however it is suggested that the club members be involved in the creation
of this list to ensure ownership of the process.
- Circulate
the list throughout the members, once again reinforcing the ownership
of the project.
- If necessary,
verify each proposed member.
- Present
the list to the Board for approval.
- Contact
each prospective member and invite him or her to attend an 'interest'
meeting - in a similar manner to prospective charter members of a new
club.
- Conduct
the 'interest' meeting and provide Rotary and Club information. Provide
an opportunity for prospective members to mix with each other and ask
questions. Further information can be provided outside the meeting if
required.
- Hold a
second information meeting if required.
- Seek permission
from those who accept the invitation to join to have their names to
be circulated to the club members. This should have been explained during
the interest meeting. Classifications should be finalised.
- Prospective
member's names to be circulated to club members in accordance with normal
club requirements.
- Successful
prospective members to be invited to their induction into the Rotary
Club.
- Assign
a 'buddy' for each new member to ensure ongoing mentoring.
The clear
Benefits
- As a group
the new members do not feel like the 'odd one out'.
- Buddy
system mixes experienced and new Rotarians.
- Membership
is seen as a Club responsibility.
- New members
form a new core for Clubs next generation.
- New members
justify a strong Rotary Information program, which is useful and helpful
to all Rotarians.
- The program
can be repeated at regular intervals.
Each Club
has been sent a Booklet setting out full details..download
