INTERNATIONAL SERVICE IN ACTION

As District Conference approaches it is Time to review our Awareness and our Action

Many Rotarians understand that Rotary is very good at taking action once it has become aware of the need. Sir Clem's book Health Hunger and Humanity, the 3 H's is a story of Sir Clem becoming Aware and how it ultimately lead to the world being on the brink of Polio free. This is a grand example of becoming aware and acting globally from a local network. I am proud of each Club President and Board this year as they have been challenged by the need for awareness of what I have referred to as specific opportunities and possibilities. Once defined the action has followed with success. As Your Conference approaches with its focus this year on your health, your service, your youth programs, your international support, your Club fellowship and your growing appreciation of the worthiness of your members occupations, it is time to reflect not just on your past few months so much as maybe- Who am I?, What do I want?, How can I help?.

This surely is self awareness and action.

We now live in the International Year of the Volunteer. Australia has just set a world example in Volunteerism with 40,000 volunteers at the Olympics. There are 38,000 Rotarians in Australia and we are all Volunteers. Recently a Rotarian commented to me about lack of Rotary publicity. I asked him had he proposed new members or shared his Rotary with people in his business life. It caused me to think that the greatest publicity Rotary can get is by Rotarians telling friends about Rotary.

I had a call from a Rotarian near Sydney who regularly chatted about his Rotary. A friend became aware and knew of a young couple in medicine living in Cairns who were impressed by the TV articles on ROMAC and wanted to volunteer help. They will soon be Rotarians and able to be Rotary Foundation Volunteers or RAWCS Project Volunteers and soon Club officers, Rotarians - Volunteers in so many ways.

Every Rotary Club is a group of Volunteers. The Club has access to the organisational structure of Rotary International which fascilitates Volunteers in so many ways that I call them opportunities and possibilities.

Conference is designed to thrill you, challenge you, entertain you, make you more aware of your opportunities and enhance your desire to action.

See you at Conference.
