Our District Conference offered a Time to review our Awareness and our Action - District 9640 is "Flying High"

My Rotary Friends
As I have said all the year. It is not the position or the jacket, it's the action that makes the difference in our clubs, in our community and in our world. District 9640 is flying high.
Together this year we have embarked on a most exciting flight across a vast ocean of possibilities and opportunities. Rotary may be a vast organisation but Rotary is also you and I.
Conference preparation was demanding as I gave priority to completing the Matching Grants humanitarian projects and getting the New Opportunities nurses to Lismore and still reply to your many requests. Organising the young people to introduce and thank our wonderful keynote speakers was a task on its own. Handling the many last week registrations and supporting material kept us hopping but it has all been most worthwhile as the ultimate test of a conference is audience acceptance and all 1062 registrants were very satisfied judging by the reports.
Yes, District 9640 is flying high. This year your District Leadership Team introduced some key interests. I am proud to say that nearly every club has taken up the awareness of or participated in CPR2000 training. This is vocational training for you and I. It benefits us and the community. I congratulate the driving force Vocational Service Coordinator Des Roberts and the Club Presidents who made it a reality.
Most clubs supported donate a meal cost half to hunger Plus and half to PolioPlus Partners. Every Rotarian was given a packet of dehydrated soup from Breedlovers to taste rations to the hungry. I have now shared many soup meetings and have had so many enjoyable moments with and without salt. We really do live in a great country when we consider those who have that soup as a daily ration and maybe it is a reminder of our responsibility as Rotarians.
Across the 54 clubs of the district we are on the way to recognising 500 unsung Community Hero's. What better organisation than Rotary to recognise these volunteers in our own community. I am so proud of the reports that Clubs found this so meaningful they plan this to be an annual event.
The trustees of The Rotary Foundation approved our request for a New Opportunities Grant to provide professional training for nurses from PNG to study in Lismore thus furthering the relationship between peoples of both countries. I would like to personally thank all the Rotarians in the Murwillumbah area, especially Bob and Joyce Robertson, who sponsored our supplements in the Weekly News for the conference promotion. Through this supplement we have furthered awareness of the opportunities and possibilities of Rotary and several people have contacted us for more information about Rotary. It also resulted in much radio and some TV coverage of conference speakers.
This year we had FAIM Teams; 2 to East Africa, 1 to Indonesia and 1 to Ba Fiji to carry out important humanitarian hands on work and training. Many clubs are now joining in partnerships with other organisations. This year we have combined with Southern Cross University in a Nurse exchange program. We introduced a short-term exchange program with Chicago.
Clubs, have supported 2 Rotary Overseas Training Assistance Program ROTAP awardees. Justin of Honiara -Radiology and Logan of Fiji to study aspects of forestry We have chartered one new Probus club and are chartering 2 new Interact clubs. We had a Friendship exchange from Bristol in February and the Alaskan Friendship Exchange for conference. Outbound exchanges to Turkey in April, Alaska in May and Bristol in June. 24 inbound and 24 outbound exchange students this year and weren't they just so magnificent at conference.
We supported a Gold Coast Health Expo and received a $125,000 ultrasound machine for East Timor.
One of the vital hidden strengths of Rotary is the role of Partners.
We have produced a District lapel badge that depicts the earthy colours of Australia and our district where the sun first touches our land. Membership in the district is increasing. We know of a steady increase so far. The district has produced a membership booklet 10 copies per club, we also produced a membership business card to leave with people you meet.
Matching Grants. What a topic, What an experience, What an outcome. Details next month. Every club has participated in a matching grant. Some jointly, some alone. The final outcome will be detailed next month but the total amounts to over AU$ 420,000 thanks to your outstanding Club contributions plus District Dedicated Funds of USD11,000, which came from your support of your Rotary Foundation in naming PHF's 3 years ago. Please keep this in mind when deciding on your Rotary Foundation support in the coming months.

Your Rotary Friend. Heather.

My thanks to all for your messages of appreciation for conference.

Dear Heather, In 40 years of Rotary, we have attended all but one conference in our own District... plus over 30 others... I do not believe that any of those conferences had a program to match that which we enjoyed last weekend.
Brian and Nancy Knowles.

Dear Hurricane Heather
"Heres a dynamic lady just full of endeavour. Energetic non-stop; never ruffling a feather. A Rotary Governor couldn't get better. This blossoming flower one hundred % Heather!"
